We all spend most of our lives at home, and while it might be said that ‘our home is our castle’ it is also where we are typically at our most vulnerable, for two reasons.

The first reason is that much of the time, while we’re at home, we’re asleep.  The second reason is that we tend to feel most relaxed and least threatened when we’re at home.  We know the neighbors, we’re in our own familiar home territory, we have friend visit, and so on.  We’re in ‘Condition White’ – we’re not on our guard and not expecting danger or threats.

But the sad reality is the opposite.  We are usually at our most vulnerable while at home.  Here’s an example – the doorbell rings.  You go to the door and open it to talk to the stranger on the other side, without ever pausing to think about the massive personal vulnerability you have just created.

Even if we think we’re secure, it is probably only an illusion of security.  Here’s a change to our earlier example – the doorbell rings.  You have a safety chain/latch on the door, and only open it the couple of inches the chain allows to talk to the person on the other side.  Are you safer?  We challenge you to answer that question for yourself – have your door open on the safety chain, and from the outside, see if you can throw your body into the door close to the door handle and burst the chain off.  If you’re a 100 lb lady, have your husband or brother or son or father do this for you.

Still feel safe with that ‘safety’ chain?

And, for that matter, what about the door lock itself?  Two considerations apply here – is it well mounted so that a strong assault on the door from the other side won’t rip it out of the door jamb, and does it have a reasonably secure lock/key mechanism that criminals can’t defeat in less than 30 seconds with a readily obtainable lockpick gun?

And – a bonus third consideration – many homes in the Pacific Northwest are designed to have a panel of glass right next to their front door.  What is to stop a bad guy from simply smashing through that glass, reaching around, and unlocking/opening your front door?

Should we also mention that the most consistently violent crimes are those committed on people in their own homes?

This is just the start of things that are considered in the Code Green Home Security Audit and Defensive Tactics workshop.  We have one of our people visit you at home, at a time of your convenience and choosing (day or night, weekday or weekend).  We walk through your home and surroundings together to identify areas of risk and steps you can take to harden your home, making it less attractive to burglars and criminals in the first place.

We then discuss how you should handle events ranging from unexpected callers at the front door to waking up in the middle of the night from the sound of someone inside your home.

We also touch on other home security matters – for example, you wake in the middle of the night to hear your smoke detector alarm sounding.  There’s a fire in front of your bedroom door, making it impossible to exit through the door.  Do you have an alternate way of safely leaving your bedroom in such a case?

At the end of our 90 minute audit and discussion, you’ll have a much better appreciation of your home environment, its potential weaknesses and vulnerabilities, and how to address these issues to give you a much more realistic degree of safety and security in your home.

As always, if you don’t think you learned anything of value from our presentation, our Code Green Guarantee allows you to request an immediate refund of our fee.

Note :  We restrict this presentation to just the one or two of you who live in your home, optionally along with any children living with you.  We’re not comfortable disclosing the vulnerabilities of your home environment to other people, no matter how good a friends they may be.

You’re welcome to make it into a ‘block party’ with neighbors and friends attending too, but in such a case we would prefer to vary the presentation into a more generic discussion of home environments, vulnerabilities, and defensive strategies, and we’d also then vary the total fee to reflect a larger number of participants.

Alternatively, you and your neighbors can schedule us to give back to back audits so as to split the traveling time and cost two or more ways.

Fee Schedule

We charge $125 for this one and a half hour session.  We also charge $1/minute for the traveling time to get from where we were to where you are – we don’t charge for the traveling time from when we leave your home to where we are traveling to next.

If you wish us to stay longer than 90 minutes with you, we will be pleased to do so, subject to other appointment/commitments, at a rate of $1.25 per minute (ie $75/hour) for as long as you wish.
